Hyperbitcoinization
What happens if people switch from weak currencies to Bitcoin quickly and at scale. Where the term comes from, how it could unfold step by step, where we are today by live data, and what supporters and critics say.
In 30 seconds
- Hyperbitcoinization is a hypothesis: one day Bitcoin becomes the main money and weak currencies lose their users fast.
- The usual path: collectible → store of value → medium of exchange → unit of account.
- Today Bitcoin is roughly at stage two: people save in it, but almost nobody prices things in it.
- This is not a forecast or investment advice. The idea has serious critics, listed below.
What it is, in plain words
The term was coined by Daniel Krawisz in the essay “Hyperbitcoinization” for the Satoshi Nakamoto Institute on 29 March 2014. He described what happens to a currency that stands in Bitcoin's path: prices in it climb fast until it stops being money.
It looks like hyperinflation, but the cause is different. In hyperinflation a government prints money. In hyperbitcoinization nobody prints anything: people voluntarily pick a better money and the old currency loses demand. Krawisz expected it to be faster than hyperinflation, because Bitcoin crosses borders easily, and gentler on the economy, because people move to something better rather than something worse.
How it could unfold: 4 stages
The usual path a new money takes to acceptance. Stages overlap rather than switch on a bell.
- 1
Collectible
A few enthusiasts hold it because it is new and interesting. The price is tiny and jumps around. 2009–2011.
Sign: Bought for curiosity, not for saving
- 2
Store of value
we are herePeople start saving in it because the supply is fixed at 21 million and nobody can print more. Big companies, funds and some governments buy it. Price is still volatile. This is roughly where Bitcoin is today.
Sign: ETFs, company treasuries, reserves
- 3
Medium of exchange
People pay for everyday things in it, not only save. That needs cheap fast payments (Lightning) and stable enough prices. Today this happens only in pockets.
Sign: Shops price in dollars, accept bitcoin
- 4
Unit of account
Prices, salaries and contracts are written in bitcoin or sats, and dollars become the thing you convert. No large economy is here yet.
Sign: Prices in sats, not dollars
Gresham's law and Thiers' law
Gresham's law
When the law forces people to accept two moneys at the same value, they spend the worse one and keep the better one. Bad money drives good money out of circulation. That is why many people save bitcoin and spend dollars.
Wikipedia ↗Thiers' law (the reverse)
When nobody is forced to accept the bad money, sellers start refusing it and ask for the good one. Then good money drives out bad. Hyperbitcoinization assumes this second law wins: shops begin to demand bitcoin, and the weak currency loses buyers fast.

Arguments for, and critiques
For
- Fixed supply
No more than 21 million bitcoin will ever exist. Savers who are tired of losing to inflation get an asset nobody can dilute.
- Crosses borders easily
Capital controls work poorly against a 12-word seed phrase. Krawisz argued this makes a switch faster than any hyperinflation.
- Network effect
Every new holder, ETF, company and node makes bitcoin more liquid and more useful for the next one. Money tends to winner-takes-most.
- Payments are improving
Lightning lets people send small amounts in seconds for a fraction of a cent, which the stage “medium of exchange” needs.
Against
- Too volatile to price things in
A money that can drop 70% in a year is hard to use for salaries and rent. Central bankers say a fixed supply cannot adjust to demand, so the price swings.
- Does not scale on-chain
The base chain handles only a few transactions per second. Mass use depends on second layers and custodians, which bring back trusted middlemen.
- Little real payment use
ECB staff argue bitcoin has never been used to any significant extent for legal real-world payments and that its value relies on new buyers.
- States push back
El Salvador made bitcoin legal tender in 2021, then under an IMF deal made acceptance voluntary from 2025. The Central African Republic repealed its 2022 law in 2023.

FAQ
What does hyperbitcoinization mean in one sentence?
The moment when people switch from a weak national currency to bitcoin so fast that bitcoin becomes the main money and the old currency stops being used.
Has it happened anywhere?
No. No country prices goods, wages and taxes mainly in bitcoin. El Salvador came closest legally, but most people there kept using dollars, and acceptance became voluntary in 2025.
Is it the same as hyperinflation?
No. In hyperinflation a government prints money until it is worthless. In hyperbitcoinization a currency loses users because people voluntarily pick a better money, and the supply of either money does not have to change.
Would bitcoin be worth millions then?
Hal Finney estimated about $10 million per coin as a thought experiment in 2009. That is a scenario, not a forecast. Nobody knows, and this is not investment advice.
How would we notice it starting?
Watch the indicators on this page: bitcoin's value versus gold, how much supply sits in ETFs, companies and states, Lightning capacity, and whether shops start quoting prices in sats.
What are the risks for me?
Price can fall a lot, payments can be lost to mistakes or scams, and laws change. Only use money you can afford to lose and learn self-custody first.
