Chapter 5: Money and time preference
Time preference is how much people value the present over the future. The author argues that money which holds its value encourages saving and long-term planning (lower time preference), while money that loses value pushes people to spend and borrow now. He links this to investment, culture and even art and architecture. It is an Austrian-school argument; treat the broad cultural claims as the author's interpretation.
