What they share
Both are scarce, not issued by a government, and valued by people who want an asset outside the banking system.
Where they differ
Gold has thousands of years of history and physical uses, but it is heavy to move and hard to verify. Bitcoin's supply is fixed by code and anyone can verify it with a node; it moves across the world in minutes, and you can hold it as a phrase in your head. It is also far younger and much more volatile.
Risks
Gold risks: storage, confiscation, fake bars. Bitcoin risks: lost keys, scams, large price swings, regulation. This page is not investment advice.
FAQ
- Is Bitcoin 'digital gold'?
- It is a popular description because of the fixed supply. Whether it behaves like gold over the long run is still debated.
