Hot and Cold Wallets

A Bitcoin wallet does not hold coins. It holds the keys that let you spend them. A hot wallet is an app connected to the internet, handy for small everyday amounts. A cold wallet keeps your keys offline, for example on a small hardware device. Being offline makes a cold wallet much harder for hackers to reach.

Keys and Seed Phrase

Your private key is the secret that controls your Bitcoin. Your wallet shows it as a seed phrase, a list of twelve or twenty-four words. Write the seed phrase down on paper, by hand. For extra safety, some people stamp it on a metal plate that survives fire and water.

Golden Rules

Never take a photo of your seed phrase. Never store it in the cloud, email or notes apps. Never share it with anyone, not even someone claiming to be support. Remember: not your keys, not your coins.
