Tether

Tether, 'The Stable Company', issues the USD₮ stablecoin and backs projects in other areas. USD₮ runs on many blockchains; on Bitcoin, Tether selected Utexo to mint USDT (per Utexo).

Tether started buying bitcoin for its reserves as a written policy. On 17 May 2023 it said it would regularly put up to 15% of its net realized operating profits into bitcoin, counting only realized gains, holding the coins on top of the reserves that back its tokens and keeping its own private keys rather than using a custodian [tether.io]. Its current bitcoin holdings are tracked on the Tether Holdings page, with the source and the as-of time; the figure is not repeated here, so it never goes stale.

On 3 March 2022 the City of Lugano and Tether launched Lugano's Plan ₿ [tether.io]. According to the city, the first phase (2022–2025) brought university courses, the PoW.space hub, the annual Plan ₿ Forum and payments in bitcoin, USD₮ and the city's LVGA token at more than 400 local businesses; on 3 March 2026 the two signed a second letter of intent for 2026–2030 [lugano.ch]. In January 2025 Tether said it was relocating the group to El Salvador after obtaining a Digital Asset Service Provider licence and a stablecoin issuer licence there [tether.io].
