Keys And Payments

Can money work without a bank in the middle? Bitcoin does it, and the idea is simpler than it sounds. Your wallet holds a secret key. It works like a signature that only you can make. When you pay, your wallet signs the message and sends it to the network. Anyone can check the signature is real, but nobody can fake it.

Blocks And Miners

Many computers around the world, called nodes, each keep a copy of the full record of payments. Miners collect new payments into a block, about once every ten minutes. To add a block, miners spend real energy solving a puzzle. This is called proof of work. The winner earns new coins plus fees, and every node checks the block.

Rules And Limits

Each block points to the one before it, forming a chain of blocks. Changing old history would mean redoing all that work, so the record is very hard to rewrite. The rules cap the supply at 21 million coins, and every node enforces them. Which part surprised you most: the keys, the miners, or the chain? Tell us in the comments.
