What Is Lightning
The Lightning Network is a second layer built on top of Bitcoin. It lets you send Bitcoin in seconds, instead of waiting for a block. Fees are usually just a few sats, which makes small payments practical. It is designed for everyday things, like paying for a coffee.
How It Works
Two parties lock some Bitcoin into a payment channel on the main chain. Inside the channel, they can pay each other many times without new blocks. Payments can hop across connected channels to reach almost anyone. When a channel closes, the final balance is settled on the Bitcoin blockchain.
Using It
To get paid, you share a Lightning invoice, often as a QR code. Many wallets support Lightning, some custodial, some where you hold the keys. It works best for small, frequent payments. Large savings usually stay on chain. It is still real Bitcoin, just moving faster and cheaper.
