Paper Is Fragile

Your seed phrase is written on paper? One fire or flood could erase your access to Bitcoin. Paper burns, soaks, fades and gets thrown away by accident. That is why many people copy their recovery words onto a metal backup, stamped or engraved. Good steel survives far higher heat than paper and does not rot. Quality and tests vary by product.

Passphrase

Many wallets also support a passphrase, an optional extra word added to your seed phrase. Seed plus passphrase opens a completely different wallet. Same words, different coins. If someone finds your seed alone, they cannot reach the funds behind the passphrase. But there is no reset. Forget the passphrase, exactly as typed, and those funds are lost.

Good Habits

Store the passphrase separately from the seed backup, never together. Test a restore with a small amount before you rely on the backup. Never photograph your words or store them in the cloud, email or a chat. This is education, not investment advice. Paper, steel, or passphrase: how do you protect your backup? Tell us below.
