You Press Send

What really happens after you press send? Your wallet picks coins and builds a transaction. It signs the transaction with your private key, right on your device. The signed transaction is broadcast to Bitcoin nodes, which pass it on to their peers. Each node checks it: valid signatures, and coins that exist and are not already spent.

The Mempool

Valid transactions wait in the mempool, a waiting room for unconfirmed payments. Block space is limited, so miners usually pick the transactions paying the highest fee per byte first. Miners pack transactions into a block and race to find a valid proof of work. On average a new block is found about every ten minutes, but it can be faster or slower.

Confirmed

When your transaction is in a block, it has one confirmation. Each new block on top adds another confirmation and makes reversal much harder. Many services wait for a few confirmations for larger amounts. Then the payment is final. This is education, not investment advice. How long did your first Bitcoin transaction take?
