Bitcoin Pizza Day
On 22 May 2010 Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas, the first well-known purchase of real goods with bitcoin. 22 May is now celebrated as Bitcoin Pizza Day.
What happened
On 18 May 2010 Laszlo Hanyecz posted on the BitcoinTalk forum offering 10,000 BTC to anyone who would deliver two large pizzas to him in Florida. Four days later another forum user ordered two pizzas from Papa John's for him and received the coins. The payment is in block 57,043.
At the time the coins were worth about $40. The infobox shows what 10,000 BTC are worth at today's price.
As a meme
On 18 May 2010 programmer Laszlo Hanyecz offered 10,000 BTC on BitcoinTalk for two large pizzas. On 22 May another user (jercos) ordered two Papa John's pizzas to his door and got the coins, then worth about $41. It is remembered as the first purchase of a physical good with bitcoin and is celebrated every 22 May.
